It's pretty much everything that it's advertised to be. Still getting used to the smaller keyboard, and the touch pad is fine. The mouse buttons below the touch pad are a bit difficult to use, got to hit them with some authority.
It's not loaded with much junkware (as purchased from Amazon) so most of that stuff has already been uninistalled. It comes with trial versions of McAfee and Office 2007. As well as a few other lesser programs.
HAve not yet run down the 6-cell battery but after 4 hours I still had battery left. I expect it to be close to 5 or 6 hours. I'd guess that half the unit's weight is the removable battery pack.
The only significant gripe... I like Windows XP, but the installed XP keeps hounding me to burn eight recovery disks... but obviously there's no CD burner! So I bought a USB CD/W for 35 bucks so I could install other programs. I've had this computer for a week now and it is working properly so far. The reasons why I give it 4 stars: it does not come with a recovery disk (you need an external CD/DVD burner to get it), the print manual is poor, and it does not come with a sleeve. My first Aspire One A110 (8.9" screen, SSD) died from an unfortunate accident, and after looking at most of the available netbooks in June 2009, I decided to replace it with an A150. Acer must have listened to their customers and reviewers, as almost all the faults of the original model (small battery, small screen, wonky trackpad, no access to the internals without voiding the warranty) appear to have been rectified. It's surprising how much different the A150 is from its predecessor -- about the only thing that is unchanged is the keyboard -- which is one of the best, although not the largest, in this class. The 10.1" screen has the same resolution (1024 x 600) as the 8.9" screen, but the pixels are just enough bigger that readability and usability are significantly improved.

Installing Ubuntu 9.04 alongside Windows XP was a snap, and now I have the best of both worlds. Like most computers, Windows is installed with a lot of bloatware that takes up space and slows the machine down. With the extra baggage removed, Windows performance is very acceptable. Most of the time I use Ubuntu, booting into Windows only when absolutely necessary.

I would have given the A150 5 stars, but Acer does not include a recovery disc, and the machine nags you after initial setup to create one -- which is impossible unless you have an external optical drive. The recovery disc requires 2 DVDs or 8 CDs. Beg, buy or borrow an optical drive and make the recovery discs before doing anything to Windows.

We gave this a one star rating because of a Microsoft problem. Our computer came with the Outlook Express Spell Check in French only. We spent all afternoon on the phone with Acer Tech Support trying to get it changed without success. We returned it to Amazon for another but it too had the same problem. Acer Tech Support tried to recover the system two different times on two days, but both times failed. If you can live without spell check, it seems like a great little computer, but because we need spell check, it is unusable for us. First, the review above by T Orkun in the most complete review I have ever read, dont miss it. I too got a larger battery and very impressed with this netbook. I have VERY large hands and have had some trouble with the smaller keys through I have now gotten used to them. Dell had done a better job with the keyboard so I ordered a mini 10v. What a pile of junk.
I sent it back the next day. There is no comparison in quality between this acer one and the mini 10 or 10v.I believe this the best netbook for the money.My only complaint is I dont care for red color inside the netbook but its not a big deal. I bought a cheapo usb bluetooth module and it works well with my Razer mouse.
The track pad does work well despite the stiff buttons.
I bought a 320gb and replaced the standard hdd some I can dual boot xp and Ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly.

Consumer Reports gave the Acer Aspire One high marks and that was enough for me. I an completely pleased with my selection of of this netbook. This computer is an amazing value for the money! It's attractive, relatively lightweight, and great for doing the basics when you're away from your regular computer.

I prefer Windows Vista over XP and actually installed it on this machine. Vista works really well on this machine once you delete some of the unnecessary programs that are running on startup by default. The battery life does seem to diminish with Vista though. I was getting around 8 hours of computer time with XP and am now getting around 5 with Vista. Still not too shabby!

I'd like to give this computer 4.5 starts but the option isn't offered, so I'm giving it only four. My reasons for not giving 5 stars are:

1) it seems heavy for its size. I am changing this computer for a Toshiba Portege ultra-light/thin that is larger yet weighs less. The Acer must be made of heavier materials than the Toshiba, but will hopefully be better quality too (the Toshiba's plastic cover is a nightmare and has broken twice).

2) it would be great if the computer were available with Windows Vista. I had to purchase the program, which cost me extra money.

3) the cover, while attractive, shows every smudge and never looks clean. This computer may be great for law enforcement people since criminals who use it will definitely leave their fingerprints behind!

4) the keyboard is VERY small and takes some getting used to. It's way too easy to hit the touchpad and mess up whatever you're working on. I'm actually going to buy an external keyboard and mouse since this accidental touching is driving me nuts.

5) I wish it had more RAM, especially since I'm running Windows Vista on it.

I had a tough time deciding between this model and the 8.9" but must say that I'm thrilled that I chose this one. I can't imagine typing on anything smaller than this.

Overall, this is a great little machine and you can't go wrong, especially at this price! Also, it's a conversation piece - every single time I use it people comment on it, and are under the impression it must've been *very* expensive. Knowing that it was such a bah-gain makes me enjoy the machine even more! ;-)

I have had this netbook for about a week and I love it, and everyone I have shown it to wants one. As many other reviews noted, you are purchasing this for the portability not the speed. I upgraded the RAM to 2G (the Mushkin chip noted in other reviews) and the speed is acceptable. I am writing this to add some "geek" info lacking in other reviews - most users will not find the info below useful. Before making this purchase, I researched the Atom N270 ship and read it supports Hyperthreading and Virtual Machine extensions. Because it supports Hyperthreading, it appears as a "dual core" CPU in task manager and device manager; this is just a quirk of these tools and it is in fact a modern single core processor. Most computers that have chips that support the Virtual Machine extensions have a BIOS parameter enabling or disabling this feature, and usually default it to "disabled". The BIOS on this machine does not have this functionality, and it is in fact disabled and therefore unavailable to the 1% of users (like me) who would make use of this feature. I ran Windows XP in a VM (I use Microsoft Virtual PC 2007) and it worked perfectly. However when I tried to run Ubuntu in a VM, it got stuck in GRUB and would not boot. This is no big deal but it is a disappointment. I did not try the VMWare product yet.

I found a small wireless mouse is preferable to the pad, but the
pad is acceptable.

I was skeptical about this little netbook being an actual replacement to a notebook. I was actually looking for a small laptop that came with a good docking station......which evidently is very old school and due to Monitor config options pretty pointless, but now I know.

This little guy rocks in every way. Small, but not uncomfortable. Fast, but not overly burdened with preinstalled software. Has a roomy hard drive. And best of all, it works perfectly with an external monitor,.....which for some reason is something they leave out of all the promotional information!!!!! I hooked this up to a 22" monitor and simply chose the F function monitor option and picked the third option and POOF it configured to my larger monitor and looked great! Far better then you'd expect this little guy to process graphics. Probably not for gamers, but the other 99% out there wanting something small for travel and also useful as a desktop for internet, email and light business processes your very much going to be happy with your 350.00 investment.

I bought this netbook because I did not want to wait for a Dell model and wanted this to read and type on outside in my yard/hammock. This is a good basic netbook with all you will need, but there are a few drawbacks. The keyboard is too small for a guy with big hands like me (xl gloves). When I typed on it I felt like I had big bear paws! The track pad and left/right mouse buttons are poor. The track pad's cursor turns into a swirly thing that does not work at all. I bought the Acer netbook just before going on a trip.
Positives: I like the size, the unit performs well, and the battery gives lots of life.
Negatives: Biggest complaint is the touch pad. It gives the computer a mind of its own. I've accidentally deleted e-mails, and sent e-mails before their finished. I'm always afraid of deleting something important. I just can't master it. I'd say a mouse is a requirement. Maybe there is a fix, but I don't know what it is.
The other negative is more minor. The charger and cording is too bulky, and heavier than necessary. The wall cord is heavy duty and stiff. I don't usually write reviews, but I read hundreds of reviews before I purchased this computer so I felt compelled. Great little computer. Start up, and shut down is quick. Wireless internet works great, connected to my wireless signal at home and at work with no problems. Touchpad isn't the greatest but you do get used to it. I have used it for about three weeks without plugging in a mouse. Battery life is about 6 hours or more, which is great. Came with 5200mAh battery from J&R which is what is advertised. Charging takes about 2.75 hours with the netbook off. That seemed like a long time at first then I realized that is why you can get so much usage before having to recharge. Screen is bright and clear without changing any settings. Compared to the Samsung NC10-14GB this Acer has a better screen. The hard drive is huge compared to other netbooks in this price range. Upgraded RAM to 2 GB by purchasing Crucial 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300). This was probably not necessary unless you want to be able to stream tv shows and such at full screen. Since I upgraded, it hardly ever lags on full screen. I also purchased Case Logic LNEO-10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve (Black) with handles. I can either tuck it into a briefcase, or suitcase or just grab it by the handles and go. Case is a little bulky if you intend to carry the power cord in the outside pocket (which I don't). I will probably purchase an external DVD drive in a couple of months for the few occasions I want to use it as a portable DVD player. I borrowed one to load software and burn the restore disks.

Prepare for fingerprints! They show everywhere on this thing. Haven't really found a good way to keep them cleaned off. I also want to say this does not replace the need for a desktop computer. It has however completely replaced my laptop.

Overall, I love this little computer and wonder what I ever did without it.

I know that Acer netbooks have been hailed as convenient and a great value, but I have to say that I was very disappointed with both the computer itself and Acer's customer service. I am a teacher, and I purchased the Aspire on which to write my Master's thesis. When the hard drive went ka-plooie a couple of days after I received the computer, I thanked my lucky stars that I had just begun my research and was not farther into the process. I called Acer and they told me they would not replace the entire computer, but would just send me a hard drive. I was fine with this, but when I found out the new hard drive would have no operating system, I had to call again and order a recovery disc. Stupid and inexperienced me did not put two and two together: with no optical drive, there was no way to use a recovery disc to load Windows. I had bought the unit because the price fit a teacher's salary, and to have to now spring for an external cd drive was out of the question. By the way, not that I used them (Amazon graciously took back the computer when Acer would not), but the recovery discs that were promised to me by customer service "within 2 to 5 business days" did not arrive until two-and-a-half weeks later. Thank God the whole experience is just a memory, and I'm now enjoying my new HP laptop from WallyMart (I hate to use the box stores, but I gotta get a move on my thesis). Others have dealt very effectively with the technical details of this machine, so I won't dwell on those. It is indeed a superior piece of equipment for those of us who need a machine while traveling and I am quite happy with it, especially for the price. In fact, the only real criticism I have of the machine is that it does not have Bluetooth. The machine does not have an optical drive, which at first concerned me, but on reflection I haven't burned a CD or DVD while traveling for at least 2 years now. To cover myself I did purchase a Samsung SE-S084B (about $65 from Amazon and others), which is a nice external DVD burner that works fine with this machine, and is light enough and small enough to not add significantly to the weight if I need to take it along. I spent a surprising amount of time searching for a suitable case, finally coming across the Targus TNC101US Sport Netbook Case (about $25), which is sold by Amazon and which perfectly fits the 6-cell version of this machine. It has a full size external zipper pocket that comfortably holds both the charger and external drive without adding any appreciable bulk. It also has a clip on shoulder strap, which is something I particularly wanted (and which ruled out the sleeves recommended for this machine). I'm not very tech-saavy, but I do a lot of my work on computer (including a few websites). I have an aging laptop that not only is bulky for carting around, but the power source is touchy - making it difficult to count on when traveling. I waited for Acer to come out with the 10" screen for the Aspire, and really did a lot of reading online about it. I finally decided to go for it, and I'm so glad I did. What a great value! I was told by a "techie" at a big box store that the Aspire wouldn't be able to handle to programs I wished to use on it (FrontPage, Paint Shop Pro, etc.). I planned that I would probably have to upgrade to 2GB RAM. I learned if I opened it up to put in the 2GB RAM, the warranty would be voided, and some people were posting they would wait until their warranty expired before upgrading. I thought I would do the same, but honestly, have not found the need to upgrade at this point. It has a fast boot-up, long battery life, I've had no problems with the Wi-Fi...I just haven't found anything about it that I don't like yet. The price on this little gem has even dropped a bit since I purchased mine, and even at the price I paid, I thought it was a great deal. I put Microsoft Office XP Professional on it, in addition to my FrontPage and PaintShop Pro. I also added the full version of Adobe 7.0...all programs are working great on it. I bought one of these netbooks at Costco and really wanted to love it. Very cool form factor and nice features, but it doesn't have enough horsepower to do basic things that I think are essential. For example, I am using the laptop right now and watching Hulu in the background (not quite HD video). The laptop is hiccuping and skipping. I'm not expecting to be able to produce HD videos for the big screen, but just *watching* them is too much for this machine. If all you want to do is send email and type Word docs, maybe this computer will work for you. If you like YouTube or Hulu, forget it. I tried an 8.9" netbook and my fingers (even though I don't have large hands) just didn't fit the keyboard comfortably. I took my new Acer Aspire One on a trip and my traveling companion who had purchased the smaller one was very envious of mine because it is so much easier to use and also of the 160 gig hard drive.. I get about 5 hours of battery life with the 6 cell version. I am really pleased about that. The smaller screen is inconvenient with some software but it is okay considering how much easier it is to transport than my full size laptop. I need to know because I live on solar power and my total daily watt hours are limited to 1,100.

My current little laptop, a 2005 Averatec 3700, pulls 28 to 32 watts most of the time. I want to find a zippy netbook with at least 1.5 ghz processor that uses between 12 and 20 watts. And it needs to have a comfortable keyboard. I'm a fast touch typist and need a logical, relatively normal keyboard.

The Dell Mini 10 inch seems to fit some of the bill. I plugged a display model at Best Buy into my Kill-a-Watt and booted the computer and used Windows Media Player and had a hard time getting the computer to draw more than 14 watts and often it was drawing only 12. However, the computer was terribly sluggish. I don't want a sluggish computer. And the touchpad pointer was not responsive, even after I went into Control Panel and tweaked its settings.

Surprisingly, I can't find a single Acer 10.1 inch model locally. Have called and walked around to all the likely stores. In fact, am having a hard time finding the 8-inch ones now. They were all over before Christmas.

Did find one 8-inch screen display model at a Wal-Mart and tested it. It seemed quick and responsive. But was shocked to see it pulling 24 to 28 watts -- and occasionally higher -- during simple, routine use. Not even more than one window open.

Can't imagine that this model with a larger screen would pull less -- unless Acer has made some efficiency improvements. But I sure like the Acers and after reading close to a hundred of these reviews, was pretty convinced I was going to order one. (Until I tested the wattage of the 8-inch model. Now I'm frustrated.)

Am hoping someone out there who owns one of these also owns a Kill-a-Watt meter and will take the couple minutes to plug the Acer into it and watch the readings as they surf the web and maybe play a video. And then report here? Please?

Also, if anyone knows the difference between the 0150 and 0250 (just out as I write this), could you detail it?

I studied all the reviews and did some online research before i made my purchase. I can honestly say that when I received it and first tried to use it I was going to return it to amazon.com the first day. The mouse froze in midscreen and would not move. I use a laptop connection device to connect to the internet and that does not work exactly great. I kept working with it, using a regular computer mouse, and eventually the laptop mouse started to work, no idea why or what I did. My internet connection device is slow and I had a terrible time trying to download anti virus, took almost two hours. I think if someone has wifi or ethernet this would be a good purchase, but if you have to use other connections you may want to think twice about this purchase.

The folks at amazon.com are amazing and will go out of their way to work with you. It's wonderful to be able to call a company and actually get a live person to speak with and help you. I would make another purchase from amazon.com without any qualms.

I took delivery of my Acer about a week ago. I am compelled to write this review because prior to buying this I had owned two other netbooks. The original ASUS 701, and then later the HP2133. Both of which were great for varying reasons. But I want to focus on this netbook.

There are several import features any netbook user will soon realize have great value. First, it needs to be reasonably powerful. It needs to have a reasonable keyboard layout. And it needs a good battery life. When you choose what is best for you, take my word for it. If any of those three items are not up to your expectations, you're not going to be happy with your choice.

Let's cover the powerful part first.

This particular ASUS has 1 GB of RAM, and it's a single SO-DIMM which you can replace very easily with nothing more than one screw and a Philip's screw driver. The cost of the DIMM at the time I purchased mine was $25 for a single 2 GB SO-DIMM. And just like that, I went from 1 GB to 2 Gbs for the Windows XP Service pack 3 install on this netbook. You'll want to do the same. Jumping from 1 GB to 2 Gbs changes the whole experience and it's not a lot of money. Just do it. You'll be glad you did. Or more to the point, you'll not be as happy as you could be if you don't.

Next is the processor. This one uses the Atom 1.6 GHz CPU from Intel. On battery it scales back to 1.0 GHz and extends the life of the battery. On AC it jumps up to 1.6 GHz. Even at 1.0 GHz, I didn't realize it reduced in speed at all. My use of Open Office on this felt as it always feels.

The battery

The battery life remaining time indicator ranged from 6.5 hours to a whopping 9.4 hours. I have yet to even see the battery die because I have not had the opportunity to use it on battery long enough to actually kill the battery. It just lasts and lasts. Virtually every single laptop or netbook I have owned doesn't come even remotely close to the battery life of this thing. And I have to tell I have been disappointed many times in the past over this single issue. I need a laptop that can last a while on battery, otherwise I am lugging something around for no real reason and I don't like that. You will get plenty of battery time on this.

The keyboard

I hate to say this, but the keyboards on the ASUS line are the worst. And this ACER and the HP netbooks out there are superior. Both the HP2133 and this ACER have 92% sized keyboards. But just as important as close to full size is, it's not the total. It's the keys themselves. You simply must have a right shift key under the enter key and it must be larger than the enter key. Why? Because that's the muscle memory you have when you type. All keyboards have always been this way until the dawn of the netbook when vendors such as ASUS changed that. And it makes the eeePC difficult to work with. Some keyboards put the UP key right under the Enter key. And you will intend to shift, but instead will cursor up and start inserting text into a previously finished sentence. This will drive you crazy. Always look at the images of the keyboard layout before you buy a mini. This Acer has the proper layout.

Some notes on other netbooks.

You should know that many netbooks have just 1 GB and are not expandable. Do not assume you can drop 2 Gbs into any netbook. You'd be wrong in that assumption. Do not assume that SSD is always better. I happen to own an SSD drive, and I paid a fair amount of money for it. It's not so much better than a hard drive at this point. Not until the lower cost ones dump the old JMICRON controller which causes stutters in loading is resolved. The more expensive ones use an Intel controller but cost more than this netbook does. And JMICRON only recently announced a new controller that resolves this issue. For now, a cheap 2.5" standard laptop hard drive is still a better bet for the money. Be sure your netbook can use a standard 2.5" laptop drive. They are so cheap these days. You should easily have 160 to 250 Gbs of storage. Many believe less is fine, but we all say things like that early on, and then demand more and more from our purchase as time goes forward. So just go for something spacious to begin with and you future-proof yourself. This particular ACER has a nice 160 GB hard drive.

The Mouse Pad and button

I read many reviews that talk about the mouse pad and button. They all scared me by being so very negative about it. Claiming it has a life of its own, etc. And how hard the button is to press. I am sorry to say I think those reviews are written by, shall we say people with no brains, or something. The single button is really two buttons. You press the left side of the single button to do a left mouse, and you press the right side to press a right mouse click. The center is the rocker bridge. If you press the center, nothing is going to happen. Like a teader todder, the center is what is holding the button in place. You are not meant to press there. You are meant to press the left side and the right side. Sorry but, dah. How dense are people not to realize this. And the mouse pad itself. I have nothing short of perfect results with it. I am happy to discover this after I bought it, but those who wrote such poor reviews of it need to stop drinking or smocking whatever they are abusing so early in the morning. These must be the same people who think that tray on a CD drive is a coffee cup holder.

Screen real estate. This Acer has 1024 x 600. A web page as wide as the Wall Street Journal will have no problem at all. From left to right, you see the width at 100% without problem. But the up and down resolution of just 600, a common size in most netbooks is really the minimum. Some newer gen netbooks are starting to offer higher resolution. My HP2133 does 1280 x 768 in an 8.9" screen. It's too tiny in my opinion, but you get used to it. Problem is, my HP2133 uses a VIA processor, not an Atom. The Atom is by far the better CPU for these minis. A 10.1" screen at 1024 x 600 is large. You will be able to read the screen easily. You just don't have a lot of top to bottom real estate. So limit things like tool bars so you leave enough room for the content itself.

I paid a total of $365 for mine with shipping and the cost of changing the memory to 2 Gbs. I feel like I got much more than I paid for. So much so I gave my HP2133 away to a friend in need of a netbook. This is my 3rd purchase of a netbook, and so far I finally feel like I got it right.

After lots of research I decided on the Acer Aspire One netbook because of the multi-card reader, the 160 GB HD, the 1GB of Ram, the 6 cell battery and the 10.1 inch screen. I have had it now over a week and have since upgraded the memory to the 2 GB memory card. Like another reviewer I feel like I have gotten more for my money than expected. The screen is very clear, even outside in the sun. It streams video and music seamlessly. The webcam worksed very well while talking to a friend using Skype. The keyboard works well for me (with my small fingers) and my husband and other male friends (with much larger hands) had no problem typing on it as either. It was very easy to change the memory card. I have been able to get between 6 and 7 1/5 hours of battery life from my 6 cell battery. I am also able to have multiple applications open simultaneously with no noticeable lag.

I was prepared to hate the buttons on the touch pad due to the poor reviews that they received on almost all other reviews. Yes it is a stiff button but in the time that I have been using it I have gotten used to it. It is not annoying enough for me to get an external mouse just yet, and I have logged quite a few hours on this machine since I received it. One draw back is that this machine, unlike other models, does not come with a sleeve or case, but I have found one that works well for it from Amazon and am very happy with it.

Over all I am extremely pleased with this device and its functionality and have recommended it to all of my friends and co-workers. My wife (at age 59) showed an interest in having her "own" small computer to use at home, a first! As a birthday gift I ordered her this netbook - after checking reviews and pricing - Amazon offered the best "bang for the buck" with an upgraded 6 hour battery.

It works like a charm - phenomenal battery life - fast speed - all in all a wonderful lightweight alternative to full size laptops. Very easy to use - which was important. I bought this netbook to enable my wife to easily look things up on the Internet while reading in an easy chair. It does that and almost everything else we want a home computer to do, exceeding my expectations. The Wi-Fi response time is very fast. My large classical music library on iTunes fits on the Acer and plays beautifully on our stereo - wirelessly with an Apple airport express. And the sound quality and volume via the earphone socket are totally satisfactory. The built-in speakers are plenty loud. I bought this tiny netbook mainly to serve as the monitor for my vehicles' GPS. These little 4" or 5" or whatever GPS thingies are too small for me (even though I am only 5'6") so I opted for this handy laptop.

In my cars that's where the troubles begin: Even on a cloudy day I can only hypothesize a picture on the screen! In my house it is acceptable; take the thing to a rather dark room - the extremely glossy picture is fine, but lift the window blinds and voilà, you can't see no nothing nix nada zilch zero. Thanks heaven the GPS program tells me loud and early enough where to turn into which street etc. Yo I feel like I'd fly on audio LIFR (Low/Limited Instrument Flight Rules). OK.

Now on to the aspect ratio: neither fish nor flesh, i.e. not 4:3 or 16:10 (16:9 is for TVs) but something in between.

Sob and sigh... But I am too lazy to send the unit back.

Conclusion: a fine little fast enough machine with superb battery life, recommendable for use at home, in the coal storehouse or at the bar, but definitely not for use outside or in a vehicle.
